Allen Valleys Enterprise Ltd (AVEL) is a community benefit society that has been set up to enable the local community to benefit from a wide range of potential commercial opportunities and businesses. It was established through the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme, run by the North Pennines AONB Partnership between 2014 and 2018, with the initial aim of being able to explore and develop opportunities for small-scale hydro power generation in the Allen Valleys. Since then it has also become the means by which the new North Pennines Observatory will be owned and run by, and for the benefit of, the local community. Other current projects include the possible acquisition of the old Allendale First School field for use as a therapeutic growing space and community green space or orchard, and the restoration of the Barney Craig mineshop at Carrshield as a camping barn and possible community space. AVEL hopes to launch these projects in 2017 and seek volunteers to help in supporting a sustainable future for our Allen Valleys through community-owned enterprise.
